3 Keys To Mastering Your Motivation
You know those people who are always on fire about making healthy changes? You can be one of them! So many of us believe motivation comes from a secret place and we’ll run out if we tap into it too often. Motivation isn’t a mysterious power beyond our control that comes and goes. You have the ability to reignite your mojo and stay on a roll with these 3 keys to mastering motivation!
The Keys That Can Get Your Drive Going Again
The first thing you need to know is that motivation is a circle. Think of it like the hands on a clock. At the top of that circle, the 12:00 position, you’re in your most highly motivated state.
You’re thinking, “I’m doing this, there’s no stopping me!” As your drive starts to slip, you move down the circle to around the 3:00 position. At the bottom of the circle is your less motivated state where you may experience a plateau and start to disengage. Working out or eating healthy may no longer feel like the priorities they once were.
At the 9:00 or 10:00 position, you’re reaching the all-out unmotivated state. You don’t care what happens anymore and find yourself making choices that take you farther from your goal.
This position however is not the end of your weight loss journey! Even when you’re feeling the least motivated, remember this - you’re never too far from your highly motivated state! You’re so close to that 12:00 position on top of the circle because your low point may trigger something like weight gain that will kick you right back up. Those times that you’re feeling your worst? They’re actually helping you get to your goals!
You can move around the circle in either direction at any time. You’re not doomed to bottom out for good if you slide to a less motivated state. You have the power to nudge your motivation back up to the top of the circle when you sense it sliding down. Here are the 3 keys that can get your drive going again:
#1 Take Action
Think about it: you took an action, whether you knew it or not, when you started to lose motivation. Maybe you stopped tracking your food or are no longer planning your meals. To get your mojo back up, you have to take another action.
#2 That Action Can Be Very Small
If you feel your drive is waning, do the best you can to hold on – even if it’s by your fingernails. For instance, if you’re worried you’re on a downward slide, ask yourself, “Can I drink six 8-ounce glasses of water every day this week?” If you answer “Yes” then that is your one action to focus on for the week.
#3 The Action Doesn’t Have To Be About Following The Rules
The action that puts your motivation back into high gear doesn’t always have to be what you think you “should” be doing. In fact, it might be the exact opposite. Maybe you just need a timeout, so allow yourself to go out to dinner and have an enjoyable meal worry free. The catch is you also need to carefully choose your healthy breakfast the next morning.
Give these a try next time you feel yourself slipping!
